ARkival Technology’s
… Media-Quality Management (MQM) SoftwareARKIVAL TECHNOLOGY has developed a proprietary tape quality monitoring software that operates in the background of daily data processing activities. The recording media performance can be stored into a media-specific database and used to forecast Tape and Disc failures. An essential system tool that is technically proficient, upgradeable and capable of monitoring multiple storage devices and types. Media Life Expectancy can be predicted and planned for as data is normally being accessed and processed.
Applications
Why MQM is needed…
Catastrophic Media Failures still occur in spite of the high technology employed in today’s tape and disc drives and the notable gains made in media longevity. The complexity and sophistication of these products has resulted in the fact that no dedicated tape nor disc testing equipment is available for these new high density storage products- leaving error recovery and correction completely to the drive electronics. Although infrequent the environment and the daily use of storage media can both cause catastrophic conditions and subsequent data loss.
New high-density data storage systems jeopardize the integrity of Electronic Records…
The new generation of High-Density tape and disc Storage is technically sophisticated and very complex; in their complexity these storage systems are designed to "hide" media defects and to create an aura of "perceptually carefree performance". For this reason, High Density Storage Devices do not openly provide users with information about media errors and media degradation. The sophisticated error correction and concealment technology employed is of very great benefit BUT not foolproof. Failures while far-between can be catastrophic!
"Carefree" performance is not the major objective for sound data integrity, storage and archiving and a Media Management tool is a necessity to insure the accessibility of this valuable media-data in its original and true form. Access to media performance information and the forecasting of media life expectancy is one important first step in a responsible approach to sound data preservation.
The bottom line...
Media-Quality Management software offers a new solutionThe storage of critical electronic records, data and videos on magnetic and optical media gives no assurance that the media and data storage system will be capable of retrieving this information when needed. The reliability of the storage medium is related directly to the integrity of the stored data within.
Arkival’s MQM solution addresses this most critical issue as it continuously informs the user about the quality of the storage medium and the integrity of the information content.
What it does…
Benefits
This exciting new software provides Early Warning notices of storage media problems giving simple real time information about media degeneration and the activity resulting from extensive system error correction and data management. The most obvious benefits are
The software is Flexible, provides Easy migration to new storage subsystems, new operating systems and new types of storage media and storage products. It can be readily utilized in either local or distributed operations.
SPECIFICATIONS
This proprietary software detects and reports storage media and storage system errors. The software can be utilized in conjunction with the Windows NT, Windows 2000 Professional and Unix operating systems. The software provides a graphic user interface (GUI) which includes on-screen help describing text fields, options and actions. The interface also provides a visual and audible alarm mechanism to alert operators when the media storage system exceeds error limits. The storage media database is capable of integration with Oracle and other popular databases for the purpose of storing test results and operational data. The software supports all common SCSI and Firewire type controllers including Ultra160 (LVD), Ultra/Wide SCSI-2 Differential, etc.
The software provides EXCEL tabular and graphic reporting and can be expanded to incorporate additional CRYSTAL REPORTS and analysis. Examples of such reports are quality performance variables by vendor and media lots, performance by tape and disc drives, performance by tape and disc heads, etc.
